Aalborg 6 - A Musical and Flag Waving Sendoff

We were surprised and Pleased to see Denmark giving us a sendoff with a local band and several flag wavers. The group pictured are mostly from Grand Ledge. And we had a really entertaining evening with our Cruise Director singing songs from Michael Buble', Frank Sinatra, and Johnny Cash.

Phillips from USA found oil on a shelf in Norway on 12/23/69. They were looking since 1963. Most energy in Norway is wind and water. Workers in oil work for 2 weeks and stay home for 4 weeks. 7% work directly in oil and 80% of the jobs are indirectly touched by oil production. Norway pays for all Medical Care and Education through a Masters Degree for anyone, Norwegians and from other places. Taxes are 25-70% of income. 123 perished in oil accident and 89 survived. Since then many changes have taken place - better life jackets and life boats, and better physical entrance exams. The pictures give some facts about the oil production. One picture shows the drill - how wide it is on top and how narrow it becomes closer to the oil source.

Bergen 1 - In Town

Bergen is the City of the seven mountains. Until the 18thcentury, Bergen was the largest city in Norway. It was also the capital in the 13th century. The Hanseatic League lived here; there were 2,000 merchants. Norway became an independent country in 1905. There are 5.3 million people in Norway with 230,000 in Bergen. Viking time in Norway was 793 to 13th century.
