Composer Jean Sibelius
Composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) is the most famous Finnish composer. They have a monument dedicated to him that was designed and built by Eila Hiltunin in Sibelius Park. The welded steel structure of over 600 pipes took 4 years of constant work and was unveiled in 1967. Eila won the bid as long as she also made the bust of Sibelius. It was a bit controversial as many people submitted ideas and some thought that the monument looked like organ pipes and Sibelius never composed pieces for an organ.
We listened to beautiful violin music while admiring the monument. Some gardens surrounded the monument and the rhododendrons were in splendid bloom.
