Bergen 3 - Farm Life

Image
This Farm was started in 1540. Part of the house is from that time and more has been added since. Notice the grass on the roof. It is trimmed by goats. Many outside buildings are topped by grass roofs, but living residences are prohibited from having grass roofs due to being a potential fire damage. This farm had horses, sheep, goats, and chickens.

Bergen 5 - Farm Life

Image
This farmer works full time at a prison teaching prisoners to make confections such as cakes, cookies and candies. He served us some cakes and coffee, tea, or got chocolate. I had the homemade chocolate with coddled cream, a raspberry tart and a macaroon. It was delicious. May 17,1814 Norway got freedom from Denmark. They got their own constitution and and National costumes. Six months later NirwY joined Sweden until 1905. Haagen VII was King if Norway from 1905-1957. National costumes cost $6,000 or more. A child will often receive a costume when they are 15 or when they are confirmed. The costume represents the area they are from. It is expandable if one grows bigger. The farmer and two local women are in costume. The farmer played a lovely song on the piano that was written by a Norwegian.

The first picture is the barn and the third picture is a meeting room the farmer built in place of the hay loft. The second and fourth pictures are the house started in 1540. The fifth picture shows the first room built in this house.

The Hanseatic League lived here; there were 2,000 merchants. Norway became an independent country in 1905. There are 5.3 million people in Norway with 230,000 in Bergen. Viking time in Norway was 793 to 13th century.

Eidfjord 2 - Walking around Town

Image
We walked around beautiful Eidfjord. Maggie was itching to touch northern water. We are not sure to call it Baltic or North Sea.
